# Walnut

> Walnut is a local-first llm-wiki for building the memory layer of a future personal Agent.

Walnut helps people turn saved links, notes, and fragments into an indexed second brain. Its core idea is simple: memory goes to AI, the index stays with the user. Walnut is not positioned as a generic knowledge base; it is designed to accumulate the user's taste, review history, links, and editorial traces as a unique personality dataset for a future personal Agent.

## Product Context

- Local-first: user data is intended to stay local by default, with self-managed sync options such as iCloud, OneDrive, or Git.
- Bring your own AI key: current plans focus on software access and user-managed model keys.
- Hosted AI: not available yet; a no-setup hosted AI plan is planned for later.
- Pricing: the basic app is free; advanced software features can be subscription or lifetime access.
- Availability: Walnut does not currently offer online services, paid subscriptions, or hosted AI capabilities in mainland China.
